For the majority of men, buying an engagement ring will be one of the most significant purchases that you will make it your life – outside of car or house of course. But how can you be sure you are getting the best diamond for your money? Jewellery stores can often be daunting place for men, which is why more and more people are turning to online diamond stores to purchase that special ring. And, with the option of being able to choose your perfect diamond and setting, whilst avoiding pushy sales people, why not?
If the time is looming for you to put a ring on your partners finger there are a few things you should know about diamonds.
Set your budget before you start looking
Before you even start looking for a ring, you need to decide exactly how much you want to spend on the ring. Once you have that budget, stick to it. Although you may want to grace her with the biggest rock available, don’t be unrealistic about what you can actually afford. Knowing how much you want to spend can help you decide what the most important elements are to you. For example, if you want a one carat diamond ring, but the budget wont stretch, try swapping the setting to white gold instead of platinum to reduce the overall cost.
Don’t Be Fooled
Even the savviest Internet shopper can be tricked into buying counterfeit goods, but there are steps you can take to prevent this. If you have found a ring that you like, do a back up check on the jewellery store. Check to see if they have any certificates of excellence, society memberships or other internet ratings. Having these accreditations is often the green tick you need to let you know that the store is safe. When actually buying the diamond, if it doesn’t have a GIA, or similar, certificate, it more than likely isn’t the real thing. These prove the characteristics of the diamond, such as the Carat and Cut and ascertain its authenticity.
Style it Right
Most women have been dreaming about their engagement ring since they were children, so it’s important that you get it right. Take a look at the style of jewellery she currently wears, see whether she likes to keep things simple, or make an impression. If you are still unsure, get one of her friends involved to help you choose something that she will fall in love with. As a last option, if you are really stuck, trying proposing with a loose diamond. You can have full control over the diamond and the budget, then have it put in a temporary setting. Once you have proposed, you can then design the final setting together, without worrying about the final cost, as the most important, and expensive, part has been taken care of.
Get to Know the 4C’s
All diamonds are graded based on four main criteria, known as the 4C’s. These are Cut, Colour, Carat and Clarity. The cut is not the shape of the diamond, it is how the diamond has been faceted to interact with light, making it sparkle. When it comes to colour, the less colour the diamond has, the more expensive it will be. The clarity of the diamond is assessed on the amount of blemishes within the diamond and the carat is the size of the diamond.
To make a big impression without going over budget, compromise on the clarity and colour and focus on the carat size and the cut of the diamond. Though the diamond may have blemishes, to most untrained eyes, it will be unnoticeable.
