Whatever your personal style, chances are you have at least one pair of jeans in your wardrobe. Comfortable and versatile, jeans can go with almost any outfit. They can be dressed up with the right shirt and blazer and can be worn casually with pretty much everything else.

But, it isn’t as simple as throwing on any old pair of denims. In order to get the most out of your mens jeans and to look your best, you need to make sure that you’re buying the right jeans for your body type and shape.

So what are the different types of jeans and how do you know what’s right for you?

When it comes to men’s jeans, there are generally 5 different fits. These are loose, relaxed, regular, slim and skinny.

Loose jeans are a baggy fit. They allow plenty of room in the legs, thighs and bum area. Relaxed jeans are also a loose fit with plenty of room between the waist and the leg opening. Both these types of jeans offer room for bulkier men who need it.

Regular fit offer a straight leg with fairly large openings. It will pretty much fall straight down through the hip and thighs. A slim fit meanwhile is not loose but not too tight either. It also offers a straight leg but with a narrower leg opening than a regular fit.

Skinny jeans meanwhile are the more modern addition. As the name suggests, skinny jeans offer a tighter fit with a tapered leg opening.

This refers to distance between the crotch and the waist band. You can find 4 common types of rise in men’s jeans which are: high rise, mid rise, low rise and low crotch

Bigger men usually find that high-rise jeans with the shirt tucked out are most flattering. Mid-rise jeans are best for men who prefer to tuck their shirts in as the waist band is just a little below the belly button.

Low rise jeans cut below the belly button and are generally better for a casual look. Meanwhile low crotch jeans sit below the waist. They offer a baggy crotch and sag at the hips and rear.

What to wear?

Although you might think that skinny men should wear skinny jeans, thin men with a slender build should opt for straight leg jeans with a low rise. This fit flatters your thin legs without emphasising just how skinny they are. Often, skinny jeans will end up being saggy on your thin legs and will highlight all the wrong things about your build.

Lean but muscular men should consider slim fits with straight legs and low rise. This will help highlight your toned legs and buttocks. Muscular men who are a little stockier meanwhile should wear a regular fit with a wide leg.

Pear shaped men with wider hips should avoid skinny and low rise jeans. Instead, they should opt for relaxed fit or straight-leg jeans with a high rise. Men with a bigger waist should opt for loose fitting or relaxed jeans with a wide leg.
